GT Starts Season in Auburn, AL

Feb. 1, 2009

The Yellow Jackets kicked off the spring 2009 season on January 31st with two games against Auburn University and the University of Alabama.  It turned out to be a sunny day, perfect weather for all the fans that made the trip to cheer them on!

In the first game against Auburn, Tech started out strong responding to Auburn's early 2-0 lead to quickly tie it at 2-2 with goals by Sheena Mah and Gabby Sirow .  Despite strong defensive efforts and great play from goalie Sara Ong , Auburn took a 7-2 lead by halftime.  Unfortunately Georgia Tech was unable to rally and eventually fell 4-17.

The second game against Alabama was better all around.  Freshman goalie Emma Bones and the defense led by seniors Alex Hague , Crystian Merrill , Margaret Reinhard and Carmen Dunbar  held Alabama to just 3 goals in the first half and 7 goals for the entire game.  Sophomore captain Kaitlyn Kreager led the scoring attack with 3 goals but the Jackets shared the ball effectively as 10 different players registered points (goals or assists).  The team also executed beautiful transition passes throughout the second half and dominated time of possession.  All players contributed to the great win and the Jackets look to carry the momentum into games against Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee next weekend.
